The ARNOLD TWIN vice can be acquired with either hard or soft jaws or both. Soft jaws are made of F1140 material or similar.

Both the fixed and moveable jaws have a guide hole underneath for the locator pin which, in turn, is linked to the spindle shoe in the case of the moveable jaws and to the vice body in the case of the fixed jaw. Additionally, these jaws have a key slot underneath for positioning on the spindle shoe and vice body. These key slots and locator pins assure a precise alignment.

The basic idea for the use of these jaws originates from turning applications. Previous to the clamping operation, the jaws must be machined to suit the configuration of the work-piece.

The same procedure is applied to the vice jaws.

When the work-piece to be clamped is square or rectangular with uneven surfaces, this type of jaw is most useful. The method consists in machining the jaws to the configuration of the work-piece so as to assure the most rigid clamp.

All soft jaw machining must be done with the jaws mounted on the vice – as with turning on the lathes – in the closed high pressure clamping position. A separator is needed in order to provide machining space between the fixed jaw and the moveable jaws.

Once the jaws have been machined, these can be hardened with a superficial treatment by nitrogenation or induction, or with a more concentrated treatment depending on the requirements.

When the programmed series have been machined, the jaws can be reutilised or stored for a future batch of parts. As commented before, the key slots and locator pins eliminate the time lost in setting up procedures.
