What is the reason for the screw at the back of the ARNOLD MAT movable jaw?

E-mail Print PDF

The screw (1041) is situated at the back of the movable jaw assembly. This jaw is tightened when the vice is new. It should not be altered when receiving the vice. The purpose of the screw is to act as a fixing element between the spindle shoe and the jaw assembly.

Pieces of a jaw

The Vice Operation

  • The high pressure spindle applies the clamping pressure through the spindle shoe thread, which in turn presses against a semi-sphere which then clamps down on the jaw assembly and finally on the work-piece. The screw (1041) is used to avoid any ‘slack’ between the spindle shoe and the jaw assembly. The screw tightens against a piece of polymeric material (1049) on the spindle shoe.
  • Should the screw be loose, the slack/play between the parts will cause vibrations: if it is tightened too hard, the jaw assembly will be unable to move.
  • The screw should be tightened firmly and, at the same time, allow for correct movement.
